Tip #5: Content is King – Even with Handwritten Notes!

The last edition of No Margin No Mission covered how important it is to personalize donation acknowledgments. While personalization is important, it is irrelevant unless you do it in a way that inspires your supporter to feel, act, or remember. Here are a few tips to help you craft a meaningful message:

  1. Be enthusiastic! Words like “wow,” use of BOLD text and an exclamation point here or there help your message to stand out. They also help communicate impact to the donor.
  2. Keep it brief. A sentence or two is all you probably have time to do, and it will still convey an extra measure of gratitude.
  3. Avoid repeating yourself. Read through your acknowledgment letter and avoid restating anything already contained in it. Use the note to talk on a personal level.
  4. Get creative. Who else could personalize the letter? A client? Volunteer?
  5. Use colored ink. Avoid any risk of looking like a copied letter. Sign and personalize all acknowledgments with your favorite color ink, so long as it isn’t black.

January is a unique opportunity to touch base with most of your donors and, hopefully, acquire new supporters as well. The hand cramp will be worth it.
